The Power of Rest and Renewal
In a society that often rewards constant hustle and the idea of “doing it all,” the importance of rest can get lost in the noise.
For many women, particularly women from diverse backgrounds, the pressure to continually prove ourselves, overcome barriers, and achieve success in a world that may not always acknowledge our worth can feel overwhelming.
But even the strongest superwomen must pause to breathe!
Whether you’re a leader in your community, excelling in your career, or juggling family commitments and personal ambitions, it’s crucial to embrace the power of pausing to find balance between action and recovery.
Let’s explore rest as a superpower and how it can become a source of strength, not a sign of weakness.
The Myth of Always Being “On”
Many of us are conditioned to believe that in order to succeed, we must always be “on.”
Society has created a myth for women. We are told that we must excel at our jobs, be present for our families, serve our communities and that we can have it all.
But rarely is the price you pay for that discussed! Instead, push through adversity without showing signs of struggle or fatigue.
However, just like in the superhero world, where every heroine retreats to regain her strength, we, too, need moments to rest and recharge.
Think about Wonder Woman returning to Themyscira for solace or Shuri in Black Pantherfinding moments of reflection in the midst of her brilliant innovations.
They know that power is not just about relentless action—it’s also about recognising when to pause and restore.
And, the energy required to break through barriers and continuously navigate spaces not built for us can be even more depleting.
The additional challenges we face—whether related to race, gender, socio-economic status, or other intersecting identities—means that our emotional and physical well-being requires intentional care making this pause even more critical.
And, without intentional moments of rest, we risk burnout, which can rob us of the very power we’ve fought so hard to claim.
Why Rest Matters for Intersectional Women
For women who are constantly balancing multiple roles and fighting for recognition, rest is a critical tool for longevity in leadership and life.
If you are the first or only one in your organisation, rest is not only about recovery from work; it’s also about healing from the emotional and psychological weight of systemic challenges.
From microaggressions at work to managing the expectations of being “strong” at home, you often shoulder more than others may realise. Hence, rest then, becomes revolutionary.
It’s a radical act of self-preservation and a form of resistance to the systems that tell us we must always be productive, always proving our worth.
Rest is where we renew our strength, sharpen our creativity, and cultivate the resilience to continue moving forward.
It’s not just sleep or downtime; it’s a necessary strategy for thriving in a world that often pushes us to the margins.
This understanding of rest is supported by science, as well as by the lived experiences of many women.
Studies show that rest not only boosts physical health, but also enhances creativity, problem-solving, emotional well-being, and cognitive clarity.
The Power of Pausing for Balance
In superhero stories, action and recovery are always balanced.
No one can be in a state of constant motion without moments of stillness. Balancing action with intentional recovery is key to sustaining our success.
Whether you’re leading in the boardroom, advocating for your community, or simply managing the many demands of everyday life, taking time to pause is vital.
The idea of recovery isn’t just for athletes or wellness gurus—it’s for everyone, especially those of us carrying the weight of expectation.
Look at professional athletes who understand the necessity of rest. Serena Williams, for instance, doesn’t train nonstop without breaks. She incorporates rest into her routine, knowing that recovery is just as important as hard work in reaching her peak performance.
Similarly, we need to incorporate rest into our daily routines.
Pausing allows us to regain our energy, refocus our purpose, and remind ourselves of the value we bring. Without these moments of renewal, our drive can easily turn into exhaustion, making it harder to achieve our goals and contribute meaningfully to the spaces we care about.
5 Practical Ways to Embrace Rest and Renewal
You don’t need a fancy retreat or an extended holiday to experience the power of rest. Even, though these are nice and if you can treat yourself, I fully advocate for this.
But, I want to challenge you to think about your everyday life, how can you create moments of pause that will recharge and renew you?
Here are a few strategies to help cultivate balance:
- Make Rest a Priority: Just as you prioritise your responsibilities, prioritise your rest. Block out time in your schedule for activities that nourish you—whether it’s a quiet moment for yourself, a digital detox, or time with loved ones.
- Practice Mindful Breathing: Take a few minutes each day to breathe deeply and center yourself. This simple practice can reduce stress, clear your mind, and help you stay grounded amidst the noise of daily life.
- Say “No” When Necessary: Often, we feel the need to say “yes” to every request. But setting boundaries is an essential act of self-care. Protect your energy by saying “no” to things that don’t align with your well-being.
- Find Joy in the Small Things: Rest doesn’t have to be elaborate. Sometimes, small moments of joy—like enjoying your favourite coffee, reading a book, or connecting with nature—can be incredibly restorative. Do more of this and make sure you schedule it.
- Lean on Your Sisterhood: Surround yourself with a supportive network of like-minded women who understand the unique challenges you face. Whether through friendships, community groups, or mentorship, this sisterhood can offer encouragement and solidarity in moments when you need to pause the most.
Rest is Your Superpower
Rest isn’t just for those who are tired; it’s for those who want to sustain their greatness.
I will say that again a little louder for those at the back!!

Rest is a superpower—one that allows us to reclaim our strength, creativity, and resilience. By embracing moments of stillness, we can continue to rise and lead in ways that honour both our ambitions and our well-being.
